STATEMENT FROM QUEENS DISTRICT ATTORNEY MELINDA KATZ ON THE U.S. SUPREME COURT’S DECISION TO OVERTURN ROE V. WADE
A mere day after SCOTUS decided to put the lives of New Yorkers at risk by striking down our long-standing restrictions on guns, the majority of Supreme Court Justices have now decided to put the lives of millions of women across the entire nation at risk by overturning Roe v. Wade. This decision is beyond frustrating, and moreover, reckless. Throughout my entire career in public service, I have fought to preserve a woman’s right to choose, a woman’s right to make her own decisions when it comes to her healthcare. Today’s decision casts a dark shadow over our nation as dozens of states will likely immediately ban access to safe and legal abortions. I take some solace in the fact that New York State has and will remain a safe haven for women in need of essential reproductive care.
