QUEENS RESIDENT SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS TO LIFE FOR MURDER AND PRIOR ASSAULT OF 30-YEAR-OLD FAR ROCKAWAY FATHER

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced today that Jahvon Frazier was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for killing a Far Rockaway man in an unprovoked shooting in August 2020 as well as a previous assault.

District Attorney Katz said, “Three children will have to grow up without their father because of this unnecessary tragedy. Ending these senseless shootings is the reason that we must continue to fight to get every illegal gun off our streets.”

Frazier, 31, of Beach Channel Drive in Far Rockaway, was convicted by a jury on June 8 in Queens Supreme Court of murder in the second degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and assault in the second degree. Justice Kenneth C. Holder today sentenced the defendant to 25 years to life in prison for the murder with a consecutive five-year sentence for assault, and five years of post-release supervision.

According to the charges:

• On August 25, 2020, at around 10:30 p.m., Frazier was seen on surveillance video hanging out with a group of men behind 14-30 Redfern Avenue.

• Kenneth Carmichael, 30, encountered the group and Frazier, without provocation, opened fire on Carmichael. As he ran, Frazier gave chase and continued firing.

• Carmichael sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the torso including injuries to his right lung, heart, liver and stomach.

• During a previous dispute, in May 2019, Frazier had slashed Carmichael.

• Frazier was arrested in October 2020 in North Carolina and extradited to New York.

Assistant District Attorney Ryan Nicolosi of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau prosecuted the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Peter J. McCormack III and John W. Kosinski, Senior Deputy Bureau Chiefs, and Assistant District Attorney Karen Ross, Bureau Chief, and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Shawn Clark.
