D.A. BROWN: QUEENS MAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN PRISON FOR 2004 ASSAULT ON EX-GIRLFRIEND

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that a Flushing, Queens, man has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for shooting his ex-girlfriend in November 2004.

District Attorney Brown said, “A jury has held the defendant accountable for his crime and the court has now imposed its penalty of imprisonment. The prison term is more than warranted considering the serious physical injury that the defendant inflicted by his violent and brutal conduct.”

District Attorney Brown identified the defendant as Lenny Monroe, 30, of 67-04 Parsons Boulevard in Queens. The defendant was convicted on November 2, 2005 of Assault in the First Degree following a nine-day jury trial in Queens Supreme Court. Justice Michael Aloise, who presided at trial, yesterday imposed the determinate sentence of 12 years in prison.

The District Attorney said that according to trial testimony just after midnight on November 2, 2004, the defendant and the victim, Erika Johnson, 25, were involved in a verbal dispute at the victim’s residence. During the dispute, Ms. Johnson hit the defendant with a glass candlestick holder and then fled from the apartment. The defendant chased after Ms. Johnson and caught up with her outside, where he shot her in the shoulder with a gun he had obtained from a friend.

Assistant District Attorney Karen L. Ross of the District Attorney's Domestic Violence Bureau prosecuted the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Scott E. Kessler, Bureau Chief and Madeline Singas, Deputy Chief, and the overall supervision of Senior Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Charles A. Testagrossa and Deputy Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel S. Saunders.
