D.A. BROWN: QUEENS MAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR MURDER IN FATAL SHOOTING OF WOMAN THAT HE MISTOOK FOR HER SON

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that a Queens man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murder in the shooting death of a woman that he mistook for her son with whom he had been feuding.

District Attorney Brown said, “The defendant was convicted of committing a heinous crime that took the life of Rosa Green, a loving mother and grandmother. Under the circumstances, the penalty that has been imposed by the court is warranted and just.”

The District Attorney identified the defendant as Joe Manley, 22, of 12-35 35th Avenue, Long Island City, Queens. He was convicted on March 22, 2005 of Murder in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree after a two-week jury trial before Queens Supreme Court Justice Robert C. McGann who earlier today imposed a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

The District Attorney said that according to trial testimony, the defendant on February 27, 2002 at a McDonald’s Restaurant parking lot at Linden and Sutphin Boulevards in Jamaica, shot Rosa Green, 49, in the chest with a handgun, fatally wounding her.

District Attorney Brown said that the investigation disclosed that the victim was sitting in the driver's seat of a 1998 Lexus automobile that was known to be driven by her son when the fatal shooting took place. The victim’s son was seated in the rear seat and was not injured.

Senior Executive Assistant District Attorney for Trials James C. Quinn prosecuted the case.
